The Donnie & George Turner Memorial is sponsored by Truro Raceway. The program helps boost rural spending from costs associated with raising and training young racehorses.
With divisions for 3-year-old colts and fillies pacers, stake eligibility includes all horses that were foaled in the Atlantic Provinces.
The traditional Donnie and George Turner Memorial for three-year-old pacing colts and fillies sees some of the finest stakes contenders of the Maritime’s compete for top prize.
Both Donnie and George Turner held a passion for horses as well as being an active part of the formative days of the Bible Hill oval, serving as executive members of the Jollity Horsemen’s Club, formed in 1949.
The late Carl MacKenzie, general manager and secretary of the Truro Raceway, and the Jollity Club were largely responsible for initiating the event to honour the memory of Donnie Turner in 1958. The name of the stake was subsequently changed as an acknowledgement for both Donnie and George.
